My students need a hydroponic gardening tower, seeds, microscope, and environmental books to help them learn about sustainable ways to grow their food.
This project was inspired by Sustainable Urban Agriculture for the Planet and Planting Detroit Solutions for Pollution. Many of my urban students don't realize the impact of food production on the planet. My students will learn how to grow healthy food without a negative impact on the Earth.
I teach at the oldest public Montessori school in Georgia.
The school is PK-8. I am a 7th and 8th grade teacher who specializes in mathematics, but also teaches practical life skills. The adolescent students are called "Erdkinder" by Maria Montessori that means children of the Earth. My students like to work with their hands, but in our urban setting many of them have not had the opportunity to grow their own food from a garden.
My Project
My class needs two hydroponic garden towers that will allow us to have a classroom garden in our limited urban space. This garden will allow my students to experience a sustainable growing process from planting to consumption. The microscopes will help them observe and collect data on the plants they are growing. The books will guide the discussions on what kind of plants would be best for our class. My students will also research the different environmental impacts both human and natural on global food production. As they grow their own healthy food, they will research 'big farming' practices and environmental issues that are not good for food production. They will share their food and findings throughout our building by redelivering their discoveries to the PK-3 grade classes.
My students will gain a deep understanding of sustainable food production and environmental awareness through this gardening opportunity.
Thank you for joining with my class as we teach for the planet. This project will allow my urban middle school students to learn about sustainable food production right in our classroom. Thank you for giving my students this opportunity to GROW!
