Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Grammar gets the best of us. The smallest mistakes can ruin the message that my students are trying to communicate. They have enough on their plate. I don't want them to hate writing because of the negative marks on their papers due to grammar mistakes. I have witness miracles when they lead.
My students come from all walks of life.
On one side of our school we have students living in controlled income housing while on the other side we have students living in million dollar homes. Some of my students have learning disadvantages while others struggle with the English language. Regardless, they share one thing in common--they need help with their writing. They all want to express themselves but continue to make mistakes that they should be able to catch on their own. My students do an excellent job when they teach each other. As a group they are able to iron out their mistakes and are ready to show the class their results.
My Project
Students can project their work onto the screen for all to see. We need to get a document camera to make it happen. We have multi-mediplayers that the school purchased through a grant a couple of years ago, but we ran short in buying the cameras. Together the students can show their classmates how to make the corrections necessary to become better writers while they write for the class. Students correct each other. They teach each other. They learn. There is a pride that comes from classwork like this that makes a student smile and a teacher remember why he entered the profession. The giant Post-its will still serve a purpose for students to write their work on them while they are waiting their turn to use the make-shift Elmo. Students become the teachers as they explain to their peers the steps they have taken to create their paragraphs which turn into essays shortly there after. The projector can project directly onto the Post-its and corrections can be made right on there
Technology has moved forward and left the classroom behind.
With the budget cuts we hear about everyday, should I simply be happy to have a job and forgo compiling a wish list of essential educational tools that I know would make a huge difference in the classroom? I think not. Give me a fighting chance to show my students all they can be. I can't do it without your help. It is so important to me that my students learn the skills of evaluating, analyzing, and polishing their writing.
