I teach a group of six amazing students in a program called Post High. Post High is meant to help my students transition from High School to adulthood by arming them with the skills they need to be independent at home, in the community, and in a job. My students rage from ages 18-21 and all have moderate to severe special needs.
I believe that my students will be able to lead amazing and rewarding lives.
They currently hold jobs during the school day in a restaurant, the YMCA, and a hospital. I know that with time and practice all of my students will be able to hold jobs that they love as they enter into adulthood. My students are some of the funniest and kindest young adults I have ever met. It is truly a privilege to have the opportunity to help them grow into more independent and self-sufficient adults.
My Project
It is my goal to start a small student run coffee/ gift shop at our High School. My students will gain vocational experience advertising the shop, greeting customers, taking orders, making food, tea, and coffee, taking inventory, making deliveries, budgeting, cleaning, using a cash register, and setting up/ managing a storefront. This will also provide significant social learning experiences. My students will work alongside their typical peers from departments such as culinary they learn how to make goods that can be sold at the store.
The creation of this student-led business will provide my students with a vast range of social and vocational learning opportunities that they can carry with them into the next phase of their lives.
All of the money that we make from this business will go directly to the students so that they can go on community trips and gain more experience accessing their own community. For this project we will need a variety of items such as a register, cooking supplies, and office supplies that the students can use to gain real life experience. We can't do it without your help!
