My students attend a Title I school that receives the vast majority of its educational funding from both the federal and state governments. Because of the income level of the community only about 20% of the funding comes from local revenue sources. 95% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunches. Since we rely so heavily on outside sources for revenue, we don't have the opportunity to increase our funding to meet all our needs.
Our school was able to add a second Physical Education teacher to the staff three years ago.
This allows every student to get daily Physical Education. Because of this opportunity we have been able to experiment with a variety of new sports. But equipment no matter how creative or inventive or improvise limits our ability to increase our students to other sports. We have been able to introduce badminton, pickleball and team handball.
Another problem that plaques our students and community is the non-existence of a park district program or organized outside recreational activities. It increases our responsibility to expose our students to as many sports in the world as we can.
