Tasting Minnesota History!

Help me give my students a TASTE of MN History. Students will be able to taste the buffalo jerky that sustained the Dakota culture, maple sugar that was boiled down from sap by the Ojibwe and more!

My Students

My students are curious! They enjoy learning about their own personal history as we investigate the past of Minnesota. Many of them find quick connections to their past and start to identify their story in how people, businesses, and land features have shaped this great state.

We strive to see multiple perspectives on each topic.

We start studying at the ice age and continue to modern-day. Our units are focused on the stories of Minnesotans and how each one of us plays a part. Students find themes in the stories they can identify with personally: hope, hardship, greed, and love. They begin to see how time is a strange thing and that these stories are relevant to their lives today.

My Project

I chose a variety of foods that relate to topics we will be studying this year in Minnesota history. We will eat the buffalo during the Dakota unit in order to learn how this nation was able to follow it's a food source. We will eat the maple sugar during the Ojibwe unit and learn how this nation collected maple sugar every Spring.

Pre-teens and historical Minnesota foods equal learning history with our mouths!

Towards the end of the year, we will taste foods from modern Minnesota companies such as General Mills and Hormel.
