Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine how many children would be reached if teachers differentiated instruction?
My students are 100% English Language Learners.
Their parents are very hardworking and try to support their academic needs at home, but they need guidance. Most of them do not speak English and others are not fluent in English. My students' parents and I are in constant communication trying to work together to bring the students up to basic and proficient levels. The DIBELs Assessment along with the Galaxy Tab would assist me by providing me with an individualized recipe for success for each of my 24 students consistently throughout the year and the years to come.
My Project
Although as teachers we rely on informal assessments to know what our students are understanding and what they need help with, formal assessments are used in the same way. Each one of my students is an English Language Learner. Some are shy and some are very out spoken. I can always tell when the out spoken ones are learning because they contribute to class discussions. However, my shy students get lost in the shuffle. I try to scaffold and call on them to participate but the over eagerness of the others drowns them out at times. The new DIBELs assessment allows me to assess their over all literacy needs and even guides me in activities specific to their needs. The progress monitoring also allows me to ensure that they are progressing through the weeks.
This year our district came up with a quick assessment to assess phonics, fluency, and comprehension, but it is done online.
The DIBELs assessment is based on speed and works much better when you have a touch screen. As the students read you touch and it sends you to the next screen. A computer's mouse can really slow you down therefore giving the student a lower score. This is why we need a Galaxy Tab.
