Target Therapy Skills Through Play

Help me give my students therapy materials that will increase participation during occupational teletherapy sessions. These materials are basic OT materials used to target fine motor, gross motor, visual motor, and sensory integration skills!

My Students

Occupational Therapy has changed drastically as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. When in school, OT demands a creative mind to be able to adapt and expand on a child's abilities and interests in order to find ways to meet their functional goals. Through teletherapy (video sessions for OT while each in their own home), these demands are increased due to a lack of materials in a therapist's or child's home. Most parents do not have the material, the equipment we use in school to target their child's school goals. Even if parents are able to afford these items, many stores, and local bodegas are closed. Therapy sessions are much more difficult without access to general materials such as playdough, puzzles, lacing cards, visuals, fine motor games, sensory bins, etc. As long as teletherapy continues, these materials will allow children and their families to be able to engage and participate in therapy sessions with fun, educational sensory experiences and exciting new approaches to therapy sessions. These items would benefit the child and their families in occupational therapy in more ways than I could ever explain!

My Project

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced us all to alter the way therapists provide treatment sessions. Tele-therapy sessions are often difficult due to a lack of basic materials in my student's homes. I will use these materials to create individualized packages for each child.

Materials like lacing cards, sensory bins/bottles, puzzles, handwriting books, fine motor games, and craft materials will be used during sessions to target important functional life skills and improve independence in activities of daily living!

These materials will make the world of a difference to the children and families during Occupational Therapy.
