My students need an incubator to bring the outside world inside our classroom, providing my kindergarteners an opportunity to witness the hatching of baby chicks!
Shhhh...can you hear the tap....tap....peep, peep? The stillness in the classroom is deafening as my kindergartners wait anticipating that first wobbly chick emerging as it pushes its shell aside and lays to rest!
My 22 kindergartners are inquisitive, wiggly, and full of spirit!
They bound into the class each day with smiles on their faces, excited and ready to learn new things. Our school is a place where expectations and the support to achieve them are high. My kiddos love to sing, move about and work together. Their love of and desire to learn more about animals are evident as they ask questions, talk about animals, bring their stuffed animals to school and often choose to "read" and look at books about animals! My little learners are creative individuals full of questions and wonder. To harness their energy and direct their focus during instructional time I found they learn best when actively engaged with creative approaches which incorporate hands-on learning activities. This incubator provides just the right amount of up-close-and-personal active participation, hands-on learning and FUN! With these strategies in place, the sky's the limit for what we can accomplish each day!
My Project
My kindergartners LOVE science...hands-on, wondering, thinking, get their brains working...science! I want to bring the outside world inside and envelope my kindergartners in a learning experience most of them have never had. We live in a suburban district and access to farms and farm animals are very limited. Part of our state mandated science curriculum is to teach animal lifecycles. We need an incubator to bring the outside world inside our classroom providing my kindergartners an opportunity to witness the hatching of baby chicks! What better way than to actually peek into the world of nature and its happenings right in the classroom setting?! My students will witness the miracle of birth, they will gain a better understanding an animal's lifecycle and an enhanced sense of compassion and empathy for animals. We need the incubator we are requesting so we may capture these priceless moments and the learning opportunities they bring!
The broad impact this project will have on my students is that they will see themselves as responsible learners.
Through this opportunity they will gain an understanding of animal lifecycles, and an enhanced sense of empathy and compassion for these tiny animals as they feed and provide daily care for them! This incubator houses the eggs and becomes not only a place for the chicks to grow but for the learning of these 22 kindergartners and many more to come. Wow, it can't get any better!
