I am a Kindergarten teacher who loves her job! I am able to spend my days working with incredible children who want to excel in my classroom. I teach at a low income school where 94% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. We have multiple students in our school who live at the local shelter and do not have a stable home life. Although my students have a lot of negative situations facing them, my students truly need additional assistance to help them reach their goals. Among the daily routine of learning their ABC's and sounds, learning words and learning about numbers and shapes, my students are encouraged to read daily. When my students enter into Kindergarten, few of them understand the importance of reading because they are not fostered with reading at home. Most of their parents do not have the capabilities to take their child to the library or have the monetary means to purchase multiple books to engage their child in reading adventures and mysteries. Because of the class that I have, my students need a lot of one on one assistance to get their foundation of letter and sound recognition as well as learning about words and sentence structure. I do not have enough time in my day as I would like to read stories that transform us to fantastic places where we can explore and learn about certain characters. I would like to have some books on cassette tape that will allow me to have a listening center in my classroom. This center will allow my students to choose a variety of stories that they can not only listen to but eventually be able to read with. This will also allow me to continue to work with my students and have other students gain independence by learning to read on their own. I hope this listening center will foster my students abilities to read successfully and gain their own reading independence in the process.
