This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Books, videos, and simulations are great but nothing gets kids engaged in meaningful learning like seeing and touching live animals! We are building a solid science foundation for middle school learners and this project will add a real world component right in the classroom.
Our kids represent a truly diverse community of learners from various races and economic situations.
They come from homes around the city and have families as unique as their neighborhoods. I believe that our school community is a beautiful example of what a public city school can be. We have the benefit of small classes and dedicated teachers. But, spending money on quality staff and programming leaves little room for extras. This is where you can come in and help.
My Project
With access to live animals, students can learn to observe, care for, and enjoy the natural world not always accessible in an urban environment.
They will make slides of underwater plants. Elodea and other aquatic plants are included in the live samples kits we are requesting. With the special UV lights we will be able to sustain these plants indoors in the donated fish tanks we will turn into functioning aquariums.
They will also compare crayfish to earthworms and meal worms, seeing them in their natural environment. The will discover them hidden in logs and among the rocks and plants that you can donate. They will watch tadpoles develop in to frogs in their own lit, filtered, and contained aquarium.
They will live the scientific method and see ecosystems in action, by watching earthworms compost vegetables and putting that compost to work in our already existing vegetable garden.
This project is a modest request that will have huge impact.
The genuine excitement and energy a live creature can evoke from a child is the difference between a good science education and a great one! A simple thing like an aquarium can be the gateway to a future career in science.
We Need MORE SCIENTISTS in the United States!
