My students are in a special program where they are learning both high school and college credit. This is a program for which they must interview and be selected. Expectations are high for these scholars, but I must often remind myself that they are still kids, too.
I have taught freshmen for over 29 years and I love this age.
I get to see so many "aha" moments every single day. I have also learned that, unfortunately, not everyone comes to school focused and ready to learn.
Having taught English for almost 30 years, I have witnessed the change in my students and where they are coming from, both geographically and emotionally. This novel tackles many of the issues that my students either deal with personally or with a loved one.
Bullying, alcohol and substance abuse, parental conflict, the opposite sex, self-doubt, and self-discovery- these issues touch the lives of teenagers every day.
This novel tells the story of one girl's experience with all of those issues through a mandatory eight-week survivalist "camp." Her journey is relatable and so very relevant and would be an amazing experience for my students.
