My class would greatly appreciate a “Learning to Brush Demonstration Kit”, a “Going to the Dentist Teaching Kit” a Food Pyramid book set, and a Nutrition Lotto game.

When one of my kindergarten students loses a tooth there is always a variety of emotions in the air. Why did it fall? Will I get a new one? Does my smile look ok? How will I eat my apple at lunch?! In my five years of teaching as a Teach for America alumna, I have never had a group quite as fascinated by teeth as this year.
Their inquisitiveness leads directly to a Dental and Nutritional Health Unit. One of their favorite activities is the “egg-straordinarily clean” science experiment, in which we drop a hard boiled egg into soda to see the results of sugar on teeth. They adore using toothbrushes to scrub off the "plaque attack." If you choose, you too can help to satiate their natural curiosity by helping to provide our class with much needed dental health learning materials.
I believe a “Learning to Brush Demonstration Kit” and a “Going to the Dentist Teaching Kit” will become valuable tools in teaching young students the importance of maintaining healthy teeth. The kits will help the students to identify the number of teeth in a human mouth, recognize parts of a tooth, model effective brushing, and become familiar with dental related vocabulary. In addition, the “Food Pyramid Book Set” and “Nutrition Lotto” will be fun ways to teach my class about nutrition and healthy eating as it relates to oral well being. With these hands-on manipulatives the students will have a greater ability to discuss how to protect teeth, and the cause and effect of healthy choices in maintaining positive life-long dental health.
Truly, I am requesting your assistance with these materials on behalf of my student’s interest in the subject. When they learned of our class “dentist office” literacy station, one student inquired, “Can you put teeth in there?” My reply was, “I think we just might.” With your help, I know we can make this polite request a reality. Who knows, we might just have tomorrow’s dentists practicing in today’s classroom.
