Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My classroom was completely destroyed by hurricane Katrina. I would like to replace the digital camera, printer/copier/scanner and memory stick that were lost. I would like to take pictures of the children on field trips and participating in classroom activities. I usually print two pictures, one for our classroom photo album and another for each child's portfolio. The children develop language skills by helping to dictate a short sentence that is placed with each picture. We usually make at least two books per theme. I try to incorporate real life experiences and sequencing activities through photographs. Each child takes a book home a night to be returned the next day with an adult's comment and signature. This is my attempt to foster a home/school partnership as most of my students come from homes where there is minimal parental involvement and communication. As a result, the children have very poor language skills and below average vocabulary. Taking pictures around the school of real life opposites and rhyming words, colors and numerals is much more meaningful to my "at risk" 4 and 5 year old students. About 90% of our student body was severely impacted by the hurricane. Additionally, 85% of the families qualify for free/reduced lunch. My classroom of 22 students will benefit greatly from a digital camera, printer/copier/scanner and memory stick. We can develop concepts skills by using objects from their school community. These newly developed language and communication skills will be invaluable tools for future learning.
