Talking Our Way To Confidence And English Proficiency
My students need age appropriate conversation cards that will promote joyful and positive interactions with peers as well as support English Language Learners' oral language output.
Lynn is a very diverse city and our school demographics reflect that. 77% of our students are African American or Latino alongside a small percentage of white students, most come from working class families.
86% of our student body qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, and 22% are English Language Learners and receive ELL services.
Our students love to learn and their families try as much as they can to participate in their child's education. Our school's network values families and engages them via a variety of programs that provide citizenship, fitness and English language services among others.
My Project
At our school we have a very large population of English Language Learners. These students benefit from social interaction but are often timid or have a hard time keeping up with native speakers.
These age appropriate and fun conversation cards will be used during breakfast, snack and free choice time to promote social interactions between all students.
I currently own one pack and have piloted its use in the classroom. These cards are a hit with all students. They encourage children to listen, get to know each other and value each others' individuality.
English Language Learners get better at speaking English by having the opportunity to speak and practice on a daily basis. These cards provide students with a framework for starting conversations. The entire grade level will benefit from your donation!
