The students I work with range from ages 14 to 21. They are young adults preparing to enter the real world upon graduation and participate in employment independently. These wonderful young men and women have moderate disabilities that affect their ability to participate in academics with non-disabled peers, and need multiple exposures to a single concept before achieving mastery.
My students are eager to learn and create.
In order for them to learn new skills, they need individualized instruction that is tailored to meet their unique needs. This instruction must go beyond the surface of paper-pencil rehearsal but include multi-modal tasks that allow them to interact with the content.
Although my students learn differently with unique academic goals, their life goals are much like their general peers. They aspire to be included in community and recreational activities, to work gainfully and to have successful relationships with their family and friends. Your contribution to our project will enhance their readiness with academic and vocational skills along with increasing their individualized learning opportunities.
My Project
Students in my classroom each have unique needs in all aspects of life both academic and in their daily living routines. I have several students using various methods of communication including augmentative communication devices. Some of these communication tools are used by only one student in the classroom while other items are shared. A large majority of this equipment requires daily charging and needs to be properly cared for to ensure it has a long life in the classroom.
Presently, my students do not have an adequate location to carry out daily maintenance of their communicative tools.
We need a charging station that will accommodate more than two power cords simultaneously. Due to the large size of most chargers, even a 5-outlet surge protector only allows for charging 2-3 devices at one time. For the purpose of safely storing this equipment overnight and developing a sustainable routine for leaners, we need a surge protector that allows for multiple, large chargers to connect concurrently to be able to use a single space for this maintenance task.
In addition to maintaining battery life and charging for these items, we need to take steps to reduce germ-sharing as a result of these devices. Because many of the devices are touch screens, we must be careful about the cleaners we use and need a supply of touch screen safe wipes to carry out daily cleaning of classroom learning and communication tools.
