My students are funny and smart, and they try so hard to learn and please their teacher. My class is diverse, and there are many students whose first language is not English. Having hands-on tools available to them is crucial to the success of their learning. They love exploring and being creative in their learning. Some of their favorite things to do are STEM activities and, of course, art. I have some of the most creative first graders!
Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most important weapon which you can use to change the world." I hope that through the education my students receive, this is something they will take away at the end of the year.
My students especially love it when I bring out the hands-on learning tools available in our classroom. It is so fun to watch their minds grow and expand as they are manipulating objects that help to solidify the difficult concepts taught in first grade. In addition to teaching my students' core content, I am trying to teach them that education is powerful, that it will get them anywhere they want to go, and that it will help them to change the world.
My Project
We LOVE anything that has to do with science or technology! We are hoping to add a couple more robots to our classroom. We use robots for many learning opportunities including reading and math! Adding more robots to our classroom will allow me to create small groups where each student in the group has an opportunity to participate in some kind of engaging activity that will help make learning more meaningful. Because we love science so much and we enjoy doing random science experiments, (that sometimes require hot water) we are asking for an electric tea kettle. The electric tea kettle is a safer alternative to a hot plate and will also allow for easier pouring and reduce the chance for accidental burns. Finally, we are asking for flexible tripods to use when we create stop motion animation videos! We were generously gifted some webcams to help make this activity successful, however we have nothing to attach them to so we can use them for stop motion videos. These flexible tripods will allow students to maneuver the camera to any angle they desire!
When students are engaged in meaningful activities, not only do they remember what content was being taught, but they enjoy learning and create positive memories while at school.
