My Project

Communication is an integral part of our world. Everyone communicates in some way - through behavior, verbalizations, body language, and in many other ways. However, communication can be difficult for some people. There are people who have speech impairments which make it hard for others to understand them when they speak. There are people who speak using different languages - including sign language. There are some people who are unable to communicate verbally.

Everyone deserves the chance to find their voice.

This project will provide large communication boards for three areas around our school: the cafeteria, the gym, and the playground. These areas most frequently require students to communicate and interact with those who are not with them all the time and may not understand what they typically cannot say. These communication boards will include pictures relevant to the location that students who struggle with communication will learn to point to in order to express themselves to others.

With the use of these boards, my students will be able to successfully communicate with others, and that's fantastic. However, this project will benefit not only the students in my classroom, but the entire school. Students and staff members across the school will be able to communicate with students they may not otherwise successfully interact with. Our school strives to be inclusive in all aspects, and these communication boards will help us take a step toward making all students feel heard.
