I am a sixth-grade teacher with students that may have lost their love of reading. Getting them to read was like pulling teeth this year. But this all changed with one book! As the Language Arts specialist for two 6th-grade classes, I decided to have the kids read: "My Side of the Mountain". Eyes lit up, ears perked up, and excitement lit up the room as we engrossed ourselves in this adventure about a misfit teen, a welcoming forest ecosystem, and a friendship with a scavenging falcon.
My project involves the love of reading AND the love of science!
The protagonist in this story is Sam Gribley, and the students have been whisked away by the story of Sam and his wonderful feathered friend, Frightful. I would like to continue their love of reading about Sam and Frightful by providing the next adventure, "Frightful's Mountain" to enjoy over the summer break! We have read and analyzed themes of independence, resourcefulness, appreciation of nature, and friendship. The students have also learned about the forest ecosystem. Sam Gribley gives lessons on animal adaptations, plant characteristics, and many other Science-based themes. Many students got excited about reading for the very first time. It would be wonderful to extend this love of reading and learning into the summer months as they get ready for Jr. High. Thank you so much!
