Help me give my students some high quality art supplies to be able to produce artwork that could potentially allow them to gain college credits in fine arts through submitting their work to the College Board.
My students are from a small urban city in Rhode Island and almost all are minority and very low income. The city of Central Falls is one mile square and the community consists of students from many different cultures and countries such as: Mexico, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Cape Verde, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic to name a few. This is the only high school in the city, and over eighty percent of the students enter as ESL and most become proficient in English in a very short period of time. I challenge students in all of my art classes from beginner level 2D to AP Studio Art and AP Art History and they rise to the tasks and always want more.
These incredible and resilient students would really benefit from having high quality art supplies with which to explore their incredible talent and ambition!
These students excel in art to their exceptional attention to detail and bring rich and varied cultural traditions and vision to the class room. The are creative and hungry for knowledge and work very hard to meet the rigor and goals of the courses. I am fortunate to work with these kids.
My Project
We are requesting gouache, oil paint, acrylic paint and watercolor paint. The art materials that I am requesting would enable my very talented yet economically challenged students to be able to produce high quality drawings and paintings to submit to the College Board for possible college art credits.
My students need these supplies to be able to produce high quality artworks that could help them pass the AP Studio Art portfolio exam.
Each student has to produce a portfolio of 20 artworks and each follows their own path and direction with guidance and coaching from me. They choose a theme that is unique and important to them and explore and experiment with materials and techniques to create this body of work. They have the skills and ability, just need some fabulous supplies to get there!
