6th grade is going to be amazing this year! I am so excited to dive into historical topics like Egypt, Greece, mythology, the Vikings, and, my personal favorite, the middle ages! But 2020 sure has its share of challenges this year, doesn't it? Remote learning is something students and teachers have been thrown into, but we are ready to hit the ground running. The only thing stopping me right now? My school-issued laptop.
I want to teach my students exactly like I would in the classroom, which means I need to be at my board and on my feet mobile.
My laptop puts limits on what I am able to do. I can't have it in front of me to help students and simultaneously have it set up to project me in front of the board. These tools will help me get engagement up and participation soaring so I can deliver a lesson just like they were in the classroom with me!
This project would not just benefit my 6th graders, but its reach would go school-wide, as the history team meets weekly via Zoom to discuss best practices.
My Project
My students are learning from home and I am teaching in front of the computer. I want to be able to get on my feet, be mobile, be entertaining, and write on the whiteboard, not have to have the laptop right next to me to be heard. A lesson plan, for example, usually starts with some vocabulary review where students copy definitions into their notes. I would love to review these on the board and talk about them, or use a web diagram to connect similar ideas that they have. I like to use a lot of different graphic organizers for students to group information, and it would be great to have this on the board and fill it in with the students as we discuss it. When we review at the end of the lesson, or complete a little check for understanding, that information would be on the board for them to reference until the end of the day. Teaching takes mobility, and sitting in front of the computer does not allow me to teach to my fullest potential.
My students deserve to have the best online experience possible and I want to teach them like they were in the class with me, not like we are sitting on either end of a computer.
While helping another prep teacher with her project and to walk her through it, I started to play around with the idea of this one. I am limited to what my laptop can do, and I would love to be able to be up at my whiteboard and up on my feet, turning my classroom into a studio so that my students can get the most out of their learning.
