Our Junior/Senior High serves approximately 300 students. The staff is innovative with a strong desire to provide the most effective learning environment available to students.
Our student population consists of a high percentage of low-income families who have very little access to opportunities outside of school and our small town.
One of the great things about our school is that it has a great sense of community, thus our school is a hub for the community.
With little extracurricular opportunities in our town, field trips are a great way for students to get out and see other parts of our region. Students love the chance to go into larger cities for museums, art walks, movies, and more. In all the years teaching I have never had a group who was not complimented on what a great group of students we had brought to an event.
My Project
This project will give high school students in my Government class, Law class, and AVID class a chance to go to the movie Just Mercy. I believe this movie would open up a good opportunity for discussions on acceptance, the justice system, racism, injustices, and a whole lot of other issues.
Viewing this movie would also open up conversations on racial bias in our correction system.
It is important for students to understand what happens in the world outside of our small town. Our students live in a small town with no access to theaters so to go as a group to this movie would be a great opportunity. Having the funding to take students to a movie that addresses such an important issue in our society would benefit many students in our district.
