Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The varsity cheerleading team includes some of the most dedicated student athletes we have ever worked with in our combined 20 years of coaching! The program is young and only began in the 2015-16 school year coached Ms. Sabrina Smoot. The following year, Ms. Meg Kavalauskas (Senjanin) joined the team as an assistant coach.
Since our humble beginnings, we have grown immensely!
We competed for the first time in January of 2017 at the Chicago Public Schools City Championship and won 1st place in the Open Division! The pride and joy in our hearts and in the faces of our student athletes was amazing. No one expected us to come on the floor for the first time and take the division! We did. And then we did it again in 2018!
For the 2017-2018 season, we expanded our competitions to competing at a higher level and competed in three IHSA competition around the Chicagoland area in addition to the CPS Championship. The experience was so valuable and motivating! This year (2018-19 season), we will be competing twice in December and twice in January plus attending SECTIONALs for the FIRST TIME!
My Project
Our athletes need tumbling skills to take their competition scores to the next level! Currently, we are restricted to the first level of the rubric for tumbling. To move up levels, our athletes must advance their tumbling skills as a whole team (i.e. - we need more than a majority doing a skill - back handspring, tuck, etc. - to move on the rubric). They grew immensely over the summer going to class!
To continue honing their skills, they need these tools -tumbling wedge & octagon tumbler - for safe skill development at practice.
Having these tools at our fingertips every day at practice will help the athletes grow exponentially! We begin every practice with tumbling passes and drills...the octagon will increase the variety and intensity of our drills! This will give us that competitive edge!
