My 5th grade students are very diverse. We come from a variety of social, economic, religious, and racial backgrounds. We speak several different languages, and we perform on a variety of different academic ability levels. We all come to school each day with different gifts and talents, interests and issues, hopes and dreams.
Despite all the ways we are different, we share many things.
We are all leaders in our school. We are all excited about learning. We LOVE to share what we know. We are curious, ask questions, and celebrate when we are successful at learning new things. Most importantly, we work hard by using everyone's unique talents to support all of our varying needs. We know our teamwork is what will make our dreams work!
My Project
“Whenever humanity has wanted to know more, we have achieved it most effectively...by getting our hands dirty and making careful observations of real stuff. In short, we have learned primarily by tinkering” Curt Gabrielson. In years past, my STEAM lessons (integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) have consisted of bins of simple recycled materials for the students to fiddle with, or open-ended projects related to units of study using mostly recycled resources to produce a product displaying their understanding of content.
This year, I want to go beyond that with my students so they can focus on investigating, creating, building, and tinkering in a variety of ways, and on a variety of levels, in order to learn and do more with their natural creativity and problem solving abilities.
Beyond asking for just the restocking of basic supplies like paper, paint, tape, and glue, I am requesting a color printer with ink so that students can print out digital creations like the song patterns from Chrome Music Lab.
Since we learn basic coding and programming, I'm excited about the connections and applications my students will have with robotic materials like the Starter Kit, the Robot Car, the Ozobot, and the Sphero. We will not only be taking creative ideas through the design process when we engaging with the Magna-Tile, Lego, and K'Nex sets, but we will be building on our Math and Science SOL objectives. Other supplies, like the Green Backdrop Screen and the Stickbots, will expand my students abilities to use more multimedia to create and tell stories while addressing Language Arts objectives. I think these materials in the hands of my students will take our learning beyond anything I can imagine!
