My students need music dictionaries and manuscript paper to help them develop music skills and knowledge.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are creative, talented, and eager to pursue the discipline of music. My Title I school is a newly dedicated Visual and Performing Arts school, providing an opportunity for students with desire to pursue serious music or art study in addition to core studies. However, the expense of a musical instrument, or supplies, can be a block for some students. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and over 60% of the families are considered low income. Our goal is to remove as many hindrances as possible so that each child can simply focus on their academic and artistic goals. That is where we need your help.
Our students come from many cultures with varied backgrounds, influences, and support, that, when pulled together towards a common goal, can improve their lives and the lives of those around them.
Our goal is to provide not only the opportunity, but the resources for our students to be successful.....whatever it takes! Music performance can be that common goal or the link between backgrounds, culture, and experience, and, for these students, could very well be the first memorable success story in their lives.
The music dictionaries will be used in class, in conjunction with a word wall and music literature, to help students begin to understand musical concepts. As students encounter new terms in their music they can independently look up the definition of terms. This will also help with students who are too shy to ask or thrive on the independence! The manuscript paper will be used to develop general notation skills, practice writing key signatures, and for basic rhythmic and melodic dictation. Finally, we hope and will encourage the manuscript paper books will be used as a creative scratch pad for individual student compositions!
