Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Title I public school, we are prepared to welcome and embrace every kid from all walks of life. My students come from a very wide range of situations. Some have healthy, happy childhoods, and others have found a safe place within our school community. No matter where they are coming from, all of these students grow their passion for learning and being more successful within our walls.
Like all classrooms, in our community, we have a wide variety of special needs and learning abilities.
The unique thing about our group of students is that we focus on growing and supporting the whole child and not limiting our job to just their education. In our class, students are learning about social and emotional life skills, and how to prepare themselves to have a job in 5-10 years, as well as all the necessary 4th-grade curriculums! It's an amazing place for these incredible little minds to grow and thrive in a safe and welcoming environment.
My Project
This year in 4th grade, the manipulatives that I have previously been using are not going to cut it. I am looking to get tools for my students that really help them visualize what they are learning! For example, we begin with a deep dive into Place Value into the Millions! The hands on stacking place value cards will help them see what these numbers actually look like broken apart. Another math goal of mine is to bring some healthy competition into our room so that they can really solidify the content! Games like Jenga and the board games I have selected will help my students do just that! As important as these big concepts are, I also want to give them an opportunity to engage in smaller skills like basic math facts in a fun and engaging way! The Power Pens and cards will help 4th graders practice these skills!
Working with the amazing students that I do, I’m beyond excited for these math manipulatives to help my students not only learn the content but also visualize and conceptualize this learning as well!
The cards that allow students to Model, Critique, and Explain will help with all of the above mentioned skills! Other tools like the Fraction bars and hands on packs encourage students to show their thinking with visuals that really explain what they know! I can’t wait to begin using some of these tools that will take my teaching, and their learning to the next level!
