Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our district has many woes, but one I feel that is most terrible is the lack of community involvement in our schools. Beyond the performer or athlete's individual family, no one every comes to attend our arts programs or sporting events.
Over the last several years, through the generous donations of people like you, we have been able to build a successful poetry program.
Poetry has become a powerful vehicle for our kids who have discovered they can excel regardless of their genetics or economic resources. Poetry only requires heart - and heart our kids have. They are passionate about their craft, coming after school and descending on my classroom during lunches to work together on poems.
We now have a core group of performers than compete every year in our Youth Poetry Slam, and have won awards in national poetry competitions. In academic circles, our school has begun building a positive reputation through the success of those dedicated kids. They've begun asking if they can do more and I will do anything to not disappoint them.
My Project
While we have a sound system in our auditorium that we use for our Youth Poetry Slam, we don't have anything portable. These young poets want to take their poetry and go our into the community to both share their work and encourage a next generation of poets. The PA system we're asking for includes everything we'd need to hold a successful performance at a community venue including speakers, mixer, and microphones.
I've taught my students that they matter, regardless of their individual circumstance.
They want to take this lesson to others and pass it forward to people who may never come through our school to have this experience. I can think of no better life lesson than to let them experience the joys that come from helping others. Perhaps their efforts might encourage the community come see what else our school has to offer them, building a valuable life-long relationship,
