My students need an iPad to reinforce math facts and formulas, develop research skills and learn to read with positive reinforcement because of their learning disabilities.
Working on page after page of math facts can be tedious for any student. For special needs students the sheer visual of a single sheet of paper with 50 math problems can bring on a meltdown. With the many apps available on the iPad, learning these math facts becomes a fun activity.
My students have learning disabilities and need extra support to learn with their general education peers.
My students come to me for intervention in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, algebra and geometry. Each day my students come to me instead of staying in their general education classroom for math. My students general education classroom is taught in a whole group of 30-35 students. Without intervention and the availability of small group instruction, my students would not make progress and lose confidence.
My Project
By using iPads in my classroom I can provide my students, who have a variety of learning disabilities and are resistant to writing and bored with flash cards and drills, with another medium for learning. The iPads have apps that allow you to drill math facts with positive reinforcers after each correct answer is entered. There are also apps that allow the students to interact with relatable characters who get them more motivated to want to learn. Other apps allow the children to learn to tell time both by interfacing with different clock faces and also by learning the shortcuts they need to be able to know the time without counting up the minutes. I would use the iPads to encourage children to want to read with the apps that bring stories to life with vibrant, animated characters and voices that grab their attention. The myriad of apps that are available would benefit my students in countless ways. They would actually want to use the iPad and education would be joyful instead of a chore.
Please know that your donation to my project will provide students a way to gain knowledge and independence that they will need to be successful in life.
Our job market needs individuals with math and technology skills to meet the future needs of our society.
