I am currently teaching 8th graders Photography. As a passionate artist from various backgrounds, I feel it is ideal to share my knowledge with my students.
Because photography is an expensive elective, we are currently using only 3 DSLR cameras, one owned by the school and the other two from my personal equipment.
Students are using their phones to take practice photos of their work but becomes difficult when trying to accomplish or master vital settings such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. While we are trying to work with what we have, it has become difficult to give students equal amount of time on the equipment for them to feel accomplished or as if their skills are developing.
With eager students willing to learn and telling me how much fun they are having, I want to discourage feelings of being disengaged from the material or lack of self-confidence. These students are working hard to expand their knowledge as none of them have never had a CTE course, let alone one they have fallen in love with.
Students will learn various styles of photography but most importantly the power of what a single photo can do. They will study various photos that have made changes throughout history and learn how they can take photos with the purpose to make change.
Students will also learn how photography can be an artistic expression of oneself and have fun creating unique images.
Ultimately students will learn how photography can become more than a hobby but a potential career. This can allow them to learn not only a skill but also how to apply it for the purpose of personal and financial growth.
