I teach a kindergarten class of 19 students in the Englewood area in Chicago. Ninety-nine percent of the students that attend our school receive free lunch. Because of financial hardships, many of my students are not exposed to culturally diverse, live performances that would promote their curiosity and imagination. The students are excited about learning and being exposed to experiences outside of the classroom. My goal is to continue to find ways to give my students as many cultural experiences as possible. I won tickets from Vittum Theater for my Kindergarten students last year. Unfortunately, we could not get enough money from the students to pay for the bus. The cost would have been at least five dollars per child. In addition, my students lost out on attending an age appropriate performance. The coordinator at the theater was kind enough to allow me to receive free tickets this school year. We are scheduled to attend a performance at the theater on May 4, 2005. I would really like for my students to have an opportunity to attend the live performance, see characters their own age and to acquire more exposure to cultural experiences.
