Help me give my students a diverse selection of books to expand their horizons. My wonderful, exuberant, first-graders are eager to read stories about children like them from all over the world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a cultural and linguistically diverse group of first-graders. Our school serves 80% of students from minority backgrounds, and many of whom are English Language Learners.
They are full of energy and ideas!
And are busting at the seams to learn about the world around them. They are moved by literature and want nothing more than to snuggle up in a cozy spot in our classroom with a good book. Several of my students want to be AUTHORS when they grow up. I love reading their engaging stories about traveling to Africa as a Geologist or Being an Arctic scientist that studies Snowy Owls.
They love hearing other authors' work; it allows them to grow as readers and writers each time we read a new book.
My Project
My school does not have a library, I have been slowly adding books to my classroom library, but I am in need of a big influx of fantastic, diverse books to meet the unique interests of all my young readers.
Children learn best when they connect with the stories we read in class; I must give them the opportunity to see themselves in the books in our classroom library!
This school year, I am embarking on a new research-based method in teaching reading and language arts. The primary focus is on giving students the autonomy to choose what books THEY WANT TO READ. My classroom Reading & Writing Workshops will be focused on high-quality fiction and non-fiction literature. Students will have time to read for FUN! so that we can nurture a love for reading.
