Do you ever remember being told, "Sit still!" This is often an expectation of my sixth grade students. However, I realize the importance of movement during learning! Teaching in an urban school, my students face challenges everyday that should not interfere with their opportunity to succeed. I'd like to improve the attention of my students by offering choices for seating in order to help their achievement!
I'd like to see my students excited to enter the room, sit down, and get right to work!
Having flexible options allows students to take accountability for their learning needs and provides practice for respecting a classroom setting. They deserve a welcoming environment and various seating will be a game changer!
My Project
Students will be motivated to engage in a positive learning community by having the opportunity to flexibly learn! Feeling comfortable and feeling like you “fit” in your learning space have positive impacts on physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development! My students are very energetic and flexible seating options would give them responsibility for their learning while also interesting them through choice! Middle schoolers are physically growing at various rates while makes it challenging for each individual to be comfortable in a standard desk and chair. Furthermore, the expectation that students should have to sit still and be quiet for hours on end is unreasonable! Flexibly seating would support their needs!
