This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a true community school. Over 90% of our students live a mile or less from our school, and almost a third of our incoming 6th-grade class has family that is currently or has attended our school. Despite being concentrated in one of the most stressful neighborhoods in our city (in terms of violence, and poverty), our students are successful. Founded in 2006 in response to low graduation rates for students from this zip code, we grew to have the highest graduation rate in our district's history. We continue towards a goal of 100% of our graduates attending college, hitting an 80% acceptance rate last year.

My Project

Our students work really hard all year within the classroom in order to develop their academic skills and be competitive for college. In the last 2 weeks of school, we provide mini-courses for our students that help them build other skill sets and rewards them for their hard work.

We want to take our students white water rafting on the American River.

During this trip, students will challenge themselves and support each other to complete a day of white water rafting on the South Fork of the American River. The white water rafting is part of a 3 day camping trip. My students need funds for a bus in order to get to our campsite.
