Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Give my students the opportunity to explore their environment in the mountains! We live only 2 hours from the mountains, but the majority of my students have not had the opportunity to experience their beauty.

Also, as their AP Environmental Science teacher, I feel that it is crucial for them to have a chance to spend time outdoors carrying out field work and learning more about the world beyond the concrete jungle of our city.

My students are college-bound seniors at an urban, high poverty school in a large Southeastern city. I have known these students for four years; I taught them as freshmen in their Earth Environmental Science class. It has been a joy to watch them grow into motivated young adults with a desire to change the world around them. They give me hope for the future, and they deserve the opportunity to explore the mountains to complete field work in alignment with the AP Environmental Science curriculum. This will help prepare them for rigorous college science courses.

My Project

This two day trip will allow my students to step out of their comfort zone and camp in the mountains, fully experiencing the outdoors for the first time. We need transportation from an approved charter company, as well as food and supplies for our trip. We will also complete water quality tests, soil studies, and forest studies, as well as learn about how pollution such as acid rain affects our mountains. This will not only be an incredible learning experience, but an awesome bonding experience for our class as we discover how to care for our planet. I hope to inspire these students to choose a career in the environmental sciences and/or choose to make positive choices to make our Earth a better place as they go out into the world after graduation this June.

The world in which we live is a fragile place, and unfortunately, the human population is quickly using up the precious resources we have, with little care for the future of our planet; it is my duty to ensure that my students hear at least one voice, one plea, for caring about miracles that do not require electricity.

I know these kids. I know what they need. Please help give them the opportunity to experience the outdoors in a way that they will always remember! Thank you for your support!
