Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves over 900 students in grades K-8 who live in a historic area of the city. Our staff consists of teachers who are dedicated to instilling our motto of "Si se puede" (Yes, we can) in all students.
Music is new to the school, and the community is excited about the variety of musical opportunities being provided to them.
This is the second year of having a music education program which promotes creativity while meeting National and State Standards in Music Education. My goal is to provide students with a variety of music making experiences while strengthening our school and neighborhood communities. All students deserve to be provided with opportunities to discover what music means to them.
I believe music can be one way to bring a group of people together. It is a way to define our identity, something that people of all age groups can use to express themselves. Offering creative outlets provides balance to all ages - at home, work and in the community. Music education has a tremendous impact on students' academic, social and emotional well-being. Students' music experiences remain with them as adults and truly enriches their lives.
My Project
Our students need to take field trips to enhance learning experiences at school. Parents, teachers and staff do their best to provide students with interactive and hands on lessons at school, but valuable learning occurs outside the classroom walls as well.
A trip to the Grammy Museum provides students with a valuable learning experience about careers in the music industry.
Through this project, students will take a tour of the museum and attend a Production 101 workshop. Students will be able to meet a producer and artist who has worked professionally in the industry. They will learn about the different career possibilities in music such as a composer, producer, and arranger. The field trip is also interactive and students will work together to create and record a song on stage.
Bringing my students to the Grammys is an experience they won't forget. It is something I can only talk about in our classroom. More importantly, it will introduce them to the various career options available to them in music.
