I teach at a public elementary school in San Francisco in the Hunters Point/ Bayview area. Our children are wonderfully active and theatrical; an experience with a group such as Velocity Circus will undoubtedly enhance their natural talents. It will also possibly provide a basis for inspiration for their futures. It would be a great joy to us if some of the children would become artists or dancers or performers as a result of seeing the show. Velocity Circus takes the audience on a spellbinding voyage through the wonders of the universe. The performance reenacts myths and fables from the ancient cultures of Egypt, Mongolia, China, India and Peru. Themes from astronomy are interwoven with a dazzling stage fantasy that is unique from start to finish. In a narrative performance, students will learn about ancient civilization through the presentation of circus arts with an astronomy twist. Of particular interest is the astronomy connection in the show; we teach the Solar System each year and make models of the Sun and the planets. This field trip will not only allow them to enjoy the performance of such talented artists, but after the show, the students will create their own impression of the show they have seen. They will draw, paint, sculpt, or act out their favorite dance. They will even create their own costumes for such an endeavor. The combination of seeing the show and creating their own performance will have a huge impact on broadening their educational experience.
