Help me give my students an air conditioner to provide cool, comfortable learning environment in our over 100 year old building that does not have air conditioning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our hardworking students attend the only free public Montessori school in our inner-city school district. All students receive free breakfast and lunch. The majority are reading one to two grade levels below.
Our students are working diligently to become academically successful!
They have embraced the Montessori philosophy and are eager to learn. Many have experienced trauma or come from unstable homes. Our school is their stability and provides academic and emotional support. In order to close the achievement gap, our students need a comfortable classroom environment.
We were so fortunate to have our project "Keep Cool So We Can Soar!" funded and received one air conditioner our the classroom. Due to the poor insulation and old windows in our over one hundred year old building, a second air conditioner will be needed to cool the classroom. This second air conditioner will ensure that on days when the temperatures rise, students will remain cool. Many students have become ill and our computers fail to operate due to excessive heat.
Indoor temperatures in our classroom often exceed 90 degrees.
Students have great difficulty focusing when they are working in a classroom that is excessively hot.
We start school the second week of August. The heat is often unbearable through October and rises again toward the end of the year. This air conditioner will have a tremendous impact on our students' academic success. Students will be able to concentrate on learning in a pleasant, cool environment.
