Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As seniors in PLTW Engineering Design and Development, my students are starting their final capstone project. Over the course of the year, they will present their innovations to a panel of industry and academic professionals.

My students are the second graduating class of the STEM Academy at our high school in Everett, MA.

Over the course of their high school career, these students have taken advanced courses in math, science and engineering. This year marks their fourth year of engineering coursework. They have all completed an introductory class, Principles of Engineering and either Civil Engineering/Architecture or Computer Science.

My Project

These students have been studying for the last 3 years in engineering coursework. Now is the time for them to begin their senior capstone project.

Over the course of the year, students will work to solve a problem that they will identify.

They start by developing a problem statement that addresses a problem they see in the world. Then, through the engineering design process, they will brainstorm possible solutions, develop those solutions, test and evaluate and communicate their findings.

This project will help them create and maintain an industry level engineering notebook. Currently we have student engineering notebooks, but we are in need of professional, hardcover engineering notebooks. This will allow students to not only ensure their notebooks remain in good condition, but also are able to present a professional project to professors, prospective employers and business partners.

At the end of the year, the students will present to a panel of engineers, academic professionals, school administrators, parents and their peers.

Last year was our first year doing this course with professional notebooks. The professionals we brought in to evaluate student work were extremely impressed with the work done in the notebooks and the presentation of the notebooks. These books allow the students to take their work from academic to professional.
