Our students come from a rural, farming community. They love coming to school and are very motivated to do well. Their families are very supportive of their learning and their growth. In second grade we are very focused on teaching children to read and love science. Science topics are often are great "hook" for getting our students interested in reading and learning.
There is no greater reward for a teacher than seeing students love the learning.
My students love the science topics that are covered in this program. They are topics that students can relate to and that are in kid-friendly language. Each lesson starts off with a wonder question that gets kids thinking about the topic but also sets the stage to show them where we will be going with their learning. All children can relate to the topics of weather, clothing, animals, etc. and they are highly engaging.
My Project
This next school year presents a unique opportunity right at the beginning of the year. If we act quickly we can purchase an online science program for the whole school for $500. We could really use your help to bring quality science lessons to our school through the website, "Mystery Science." I have been using this program throughout this school year because it was offered for free as a demo. The students absolutely love it because the lessons are so engaging and well-written. The steps and prep for teachers are easy to follow and minimal. They have videos, hands-on activities, and literature embedded in each and every lesson. These materials will make a huge difference in our students' lives.
The lessons are very simple and easy to follow for both the teacher and student.
They begin with a very engaging video, then have hands-on activities that students just love. For example, today my students and I did a lesson on camouflage. I taped up some trees in my class that I downloaded from the website, and "hid" moths on them for students to find. After that, students got to create their own moth, with wing patterns, to help them blend into the room. We had some other students pretend to be birds and collect the ones they could find, then we gathered up survivors. Kids were so into it, and I had a blast as well!
There is a variety of lessons that I could choose from and units that are aligned with the common core. It couldn't be any easier. They also provide access to literature and additional activities to follow up with students or to develop a deeper understanding of a topic.
