My Students

My students are just simply amazing! They live in a low-income suburb of Rochester, NY, and are provided with free breakfast and lunch. Some live with their grandparents, in foster care, etc. They are up late taking care of their siblings. They have to get themselves up for school.

But even with these circumstances, they are thriving in music!

They get on the bus an hour before school to attend our early morning band rehearsals. They give up their recess to help me sort music. They played the National Anthem at a local minor league baseball game in forty degrees, cold and rainy weather because "they worked too hard for the game/performance to be canceled."

They make me want to be a better teacher and provide them with the musical supplies and materials their families may not be able to provide.

My Project

In a pre-COVID school year, I would often take my students to many community events to showcase their amazing talents! Since COVID, we have not been able to have any performances in over two years.

We have the opportunity again to perform "The Star Spangled Banner" at the start of a local minor league baseball game in the spring.

This would be out first community performance event since 2018! I would love to be able to provide each of my students a ticket to the game for free to lessen the financial burden on our already struggling families. I also love teaching my students about our national anthem at such a young age!
