My students need 1 picnic table with benches to work outdoors during lab time and class time. Allowing students a change of scenery can be just what they need to comprehend the subject.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a dynamic honors chemistry class. I want my students to develop a passion for science and learning. Some have an innate attraction to the topic, others need a little more encouragement. Sitting in a stuffy classroom, having a teacher lecture at them is no way to excite and engage.
The student body of my school is diverse.
We are Title 1 funded, but have wealthy students too. We have a large population of "triple threat" students, those in honors/AP/IB academic classes as well as being involved in extra curricular activities like ASB and sports and are members of the performing arts academy on our campus. We offer a whole host of pathways students can choose from: arts, preforming arts, agriculture, STEM/STEAM and a new BEAST academy that will bridge arts, engineering and sciences. Our students have performed well on past testing, with our API growing each year. Our faculty is working as a whole school to develop a new, students centered approach to learning. By posting objectives and giving students the opportunity to choose the activities, we are putting them in the drivers seat of their own education. I personally am taking a backseat and allowing my students to explore, ask questions and make mistakes, in order to get them to find the solution.
My Project
I am requesting 1 picnic table with benches to work outdoors during lab time and class time.
I have a classroom that backs up to a large grassy lawn. They recently cleared out a larger overgrowth of plants and left me with a nice patio area right outside my door. I would love to be able to utilize the space as an additional outdoor classroom. By adding a large folding picnic table, I will be able to use this space in multiple ways. It will be convenient for messy or small labs, as we can set up lab stations outdoors. It will also be nice to send students outside to work, either those students at are easily distracted or groups that need to be able to talk about projects. It will also be nice to take small groups out and work with them on remediation while the class as a whole is working on a separate assignment.
I have taken my students from constantly asking me, "but whats the right answer?".
And changed them into dynamic learners that are now understanding the importance of the process - understanding the "why, how, and what know?" of the leaning process. I think that by giving students the opportunity to get up and move outside, the change in venue might be what some students need. I like my students to be deep on conversation (about chemistry) and talk out the problems and labs we do.
