Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach mathematics in a high needs high school - over 90% of students should qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We serve a diverse population consisting of many recent immigrants from all over the world. I am tasked with giving these students a firm mathematical foundation to carry them into college. Several years ago we organized an "AP Calculus Camp" during break just prior to the AP tests. We hold the camp at a YMCA facility in the Catskills, and offer to take all students enrolled in the college-level AP Calculus classes. Many of our students have never spent a night out of the city, have never slept without the sound of cars, ambulances, police sirens, and fire engines, have never seen a night sky without light pollution. This retreat gives them a chance to spend a few days focusing entirely on calculus with no distractions. So far we've been able to cover all costs via grants, so all students are able to attend. In our first year of Calc Camp student scores skyrocketed, breaking all records for students getting "5" and "4" for our school in any subject. Last year we had similarly impressive results. We're now organizing the third year of Calc Camp. Four teachers are volunteering their time during this vacation week. Other expenses are being funded via other proposals and sources. This proposal is for t-shirts to give the students, both for safety (to identify them as participants in the camp), and as keepsakes to remind them of the experience. I've selected t-shirts from a vendor who designs math-oriented shirts (and writes the Plusman comics), and he'll custom print our school name on the shirts. Your donation will help these students focus on academics as they prepare for the AP exams -- a vital step in the college prep process.
