This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Kindergarten is a special time for students! It is when students start to build a love for school, reading, success and so much more. It is my goal to make sure that I am setting all of my students up for success, not only for first grade, but for the rest of their educational career.
Many of my students have great obstacles to overcome which is why it takes a team.
All of my students receive free lunch. Many are performing below grade level. There are also students who have already experienced significant trauma in their short lifetime such as homelessness, death and neglect. I try hard to make sure my students are set up for success as much as possible while in my classroom!
My Project
There is a lot of research on the benefits of reading to children at home. The sad fact is many of my students lack the books and excitement to go home and read with their families. This is why I would love to start an incentive system in my classroom to help increase the amount of reading families are doing at home. Take home buddies will be rotated between students and sent home each weekend. Inside each take home bag will be a popular and not yet read story for families to read together. They will also have inside a stuffed animal character from their book. Over the weekend students will be able to enjoy these books and stuffed animals with their families.
Being able to bring a new book home, along with a matching stuffed animal and activities will help spark the joy of reading at home.
I want my students to be excited about being able to take a book home to read with their families. I believe these buddy bags will do the trick. My ultimate goal with my students each year is not only to see their grades and reading score improve, but rather to instill a joy of reading that will hopefully last a lifetime!
