Kids just want to have fun! Kindergarten students don't want worksheets and flashcards, they want their learning experiences to be fun and engaging at their developmental level. With the push of more difficult curriculum and learning standards in kindergarten, I am determined to keep our learning fun and active!
My students come to school with very diverse needs in their school readiness skills.
Some can't identify a number or a letter of the alphabet, while some begin kindergarten with the experience of preschool and are ready to explore the curriculum at a deeper level. I have twenty-five students who are five and six-years-old in a full-day kindergarten classroom. Our school is considered "high poverty" due to our large percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.
My Project
My students are just starting to read and write their words in kindergarten and it is super exciting. While we are in at home learning, my students do not have access to their classroom magnetic letter boards, so these supplies will be needed so I can create an alphabet grid with moveable letters for each student, and more games for our learning at home.
Being able to manipulate letters and sounds is an important part of learning to read and write.
This project will provide the materials needed to make an alphabet grid with moveable letters out of cardstock and magnets or Velcro, so my students can still practice making and sounding out words with their own set of letters. I can tell them to sound out the word 'pin' and they will have the letters right there in front of them to move, touch and see. They need to see and manipulate the letters so they will eventually be able to write and spell these words on their own. My students need to be able to touch, tap, and blend the sounds together with the alphabet letter cards we will be able to put right in front of them. They will be able to say their sounds, pick the matching letter and build words they can read using the cardboard, laminated letters that we have made.
The materials in this project will also be used to make additional hands-on learning games, like sight word memory cards so they can practice reading our sight words, teen number go fish cards to learn teen numbers, and decks of cards to make '10', so we can learn the number combinations that can be put together to make ten by playing games with those cards.
