Take Home Books for our Social Justice Curriculum!
Help me give my students identity-themed that books represent them; so they can be informed and well-versed in the conversation and activism for social justice!
I have the most brilliant and sweetest 1st graders. They have so much to offer and they come to the classroom with a wide range of knowledge, experiences, and backgrounds. They all speak many different languages, including Spanish, Oromo, Amharic, Tigrinya, Japanese, Punjabi, Vietnamese and English. With such a wide range of abilities and wealth of knowledge, I see all of them being teachers to one another, and especially to me. They deserve nothing but the best for their educational growth. Furthermore, as the end of the year approaches, I see that they are demonstrating their leadership. I am proud to say I am shaping the minds of the next leaders of our society!
My Project
These materials will make a huge difference in students' learning from home. The pandemic of racism has been happening much longer than the pandemic of Covid-19, and unfortunately, Covid-19 has highlighted the fact that racial justice needs to be taught in the classroom as an early age. I hope for my students to be the next generation of activists that can bring about real and long lasting change for their BIPOC peers. This starts with on-going learning about identity and un-learning biases in 1st grade!
The books correspond with a social justice curriculum that my colleagues and I are developing and making lessons, based on the Teaching Tolerance Standards.
More specifically, these books cater to Identity, the first domain of Teaching Tolerance. We want our students to be deeply aware and proud of their racial, ethnic, and gender identity. These carefully chosen books are part of our Identity lessons and will reinforce the important conversations at home with families. After learning about identity through December, students will learn about Diversity, Justice, and Action for the rest of the year--per the Teaching Tolerance Standards.
