Our elementary school is a K-5 building in the Kansas City Metro area. It is a diverse learning environment with students from all walks of life and backgrounds. Many of our students do not have basic necessities at home and our staff strives to create an environment that feels warm and welcoming.
Eighty-five percent of the students at our school receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Many of our students do not have the opportunity to go outside and play when they go home. It is just not safe. Our school is their safe place. Our students make every day a great day.
My Project
Students at our elementary school have the opportunity to check out and take home Physical Education equipment on the weekends. We are adding to and replenishing our bags. Our goal is that all students stay active outside the school day and develop an appreciation for physical activity. Through a in-class needs assessment, we learned that our students do not have access to exercise and fitness equipment at home. Many lack even playground equipment and items such as soccer or footballs. We want our students and their families to be physically and mentally healthy.
Families that exercise together gives parents and children the opportunity to have meaningful conversations and to develop a strong family relationships.
The students will be able to enlist their families into getting fit and having fun with them. Siblings and parents that may not spend a lot of time together may now have reasons to interact. Sending home equipment will also convey the emphasis and importance of physical education in elementary school.
Research shows that children who exercise do better in school, control themselves better, and have fewer behavior issues. Including the community in our students education will only strengthen the relationship with the school district. Sending home Physical Education equipment with our students will have a positive impact on their education and family.
