Take a Walk in My Shoes

Help me give my students their own novels to read. We read the novel this current school year and tied it in with Black History Month and their Social Studies classes. The children were captivated with the novel.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students were able to attend the 'virtual school' our school district established as a result of Covid-19 pandemic. However, many of the students showed little growth on last year's state assessments. It's pertinent that my students have novels that we can read & collaborate on in class discussions. It's also important to me to be able to provide individual copies for my students in order for them to 'mark' up their novels as they cover the Common Core Standards. This novel has excellent examples of figurative language in addition to its higher level of vocabulary words. In addition, the students will be able to work in teams to create illustrations and a timeline for their Social Studies classwork on World War II.

Reading this novel aloud in class will help my students discuss the true meaning of friendship, regardless of race.

The students will empathize with both of the main characters as they see the growth in each character as Timothy gently yet firmly 'opens Phillip's eyes' to a world of seeing a person for his sacrifice & compassion as opposed to racism based solely on the color of one's skin.
