Take a Walk in an English Teacher's Shoes

My students need 25 copies each of the books How to Read Literature like a Professor and How to Eat a Poem.

My school is located in a rural area where we have a lot of low income families or one parent homes. We do not have a lot of money available to help with new books for the classroom. Teachers are even given limits on the amount of copies we can make. I will be teaching AP senior English next semester, so I would like these books to supplement my course and further help these students have a better grasp at understanding literature and what will be expected of them when they get to college.

Every student must face the daunting challenge of trying to figure out what the English teacher or literature professor really wants in an essay. The two books that I would like to have to help supplement my teaching will help teach students what these teachers are looking for in pieces of literature, and the students in turn will then know what to look for as they read critically for information. My school does not have enough money available to buy these books, and my students and I do not have the money to buy them ourselves.

The two books I am asking for, How to Read Literature like a Professor and How to Eat a Poem, are books that I used in my classroom at another high school with my AP senior English students. I am going to be teaching this same class now at my new school, but this school does not have as much money as my old did for purchasing extra items that will benefit students even further. These two books will help students to learn to read critically and to write better essays, so that they may do better in their literature classes not only for me, but when they go off to college as well.

With your help, my students will gain more knowledge of how to read more critically. This is always an area of weakness for a lot of students, and it is my goal to help better prepare these students for success in college.
