This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"When words fail, music speaks." -Hans Christian Andersen
Giving my students a voice through music has been one of my greatest joys. My students are producing music that they never thought that they'd be able to do.
My students are am extremely bright and musical group, born in a neighborhood of high poverty and gang rivalries.
100% of the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. We serve meals to everyone, and they don't even need to bring lunch tickets because anyone at our school automatically receives free meals.
My Project
Since I don't have any high quality music stands in my classroom, I have been projecting the music on my document reader. However, it is hard for many of my students to see, especially the ones who should be wearing glasses but cannot afford them. It would really help to have music stands so that the students can place the music directly in front of them and engage with music that they can see. It will be easier for them to learn how to read music when they can see it clearly in front of them, without having to squint their eyes.
Tapping into my students' innate sense of rhythm and music has been one of my greatest joys.
Seeing my students who formally refused to sing, play, and move now fully engage with the music has been touching. I love it when my students shout out after ending a classical piece, "I love that song! Let's do it again!" Prior to having music class, my students did not have exposure to classical music except, as they say, "I heard that song in a movie once!" Now, they are saying composers' names!
