My students are from a consolidated district that covers four towns in two counties in Nebraska. I teach mostly high school English classes and one junior high life skills class. As a small school, we strive to make accommodations for all students and provide numerous opportunities both academically and through extra-curricular activities.
The vast majority of our students are involved in at least one extra-curricular, and many are involved in multiple!
This allows our students to become well-rounded individuals, learn time-management skills, and discover their own strengths and weaknesses. We also have many students who take advantage of classes offered for college credit or dual credit. I truly feel these unique opportunities and small teacher to student ratios in the classroom make our students well-equipped to become productive members of society.
My Project
When I first learned about standing desks, I assumed they were for elementary students who were just too fidgety to sit still. I was most definitely wrong! A standing desk not only improves student posture but it also allows me to accommodate student injuries. This semester alone, I have had three students who have had surgery on their legs. Currently, my options to provide them with a desktop while in a wheelchair or with a leg brace are very limited. We have also had several students with severe back injuries who are unable to sit for long periods. A standing desk with an adjustable height would be very helpful in these instances.
In addition to accommodating students with special physical needs, a standing desk will allow group collaboration.
Often my English classes work together in small groups by moving their individual desks together, but sometimes they need a single, solid workspace. As they learn the skills they need to work together, this standing desk would facilitate better discussions, project creation, and overall group productivity.
