I teach fourth grade reading and social studies in a Title I school in Michigan. In my community, many families are fighting the effects of poverty. A large percentage of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Approximately 64% of all students at my school are economically disadvantaged. In spite of all the challenges my students face in their personal lives, we are working on dreaming for their futures. My teaching partner and I are focused on helping the kids develop a growth mindset and realize the power of "yet." We believe that these kids can do amazing things!
"Everything you don't know is something you can learn!" My students are curious thinkers who are learning along the way.
Each student is so unique, with their own story to tell, I learn from them daily. It is my privilege to be a part of their journey.
My Project
My classroom is now entering phase three of the transformation from a standard classroom to a classroom which welcomes flexible seating with a new bench and cubes.
I am looking to boost student engagement and decrease negative behaviors by creating a comfortable classroom environment, friendly to all learning styles.
My general education students, as well as my special needs and ADHD students will benefit from these additions to our classroom. The bench and cubes will provide an option to traditional seating to boost classroom engagement. It will give students choices which allows the children to feel a degree of control in their learning environment. In addition, a bench and cubes will allow for student movement and comfort. Most importantly they will foster a sense of community and collaboration in the classroom. Lastly, it enables students with sensory issues to be at ease in my classroom, their home away from home.
